The picture only shows half of this massive Creole creation.
Many Chowhounds talk of how the Muffaletta can only truly be enjoyed down in Orleans, but a few chefs around Philly have tried their hand at the sandwich.
I was suprised to find the workingman's Hero sandwich at the chic Matyson, but I decided to give it a go. Shabby chic is so in right now.
The cross-culture result? A cleaned-up version with some superfluous additions (country ham?). The "roasted" (not roast) pork was a tad dry, but the tomato olive salad and pesto added the right amount of liquid to overcome this problem. Country ham and fontina could be also found snug between the soft ciabatta roll.
The largeness of the sandwich, plus fries, warrants the $10 price tag, but the flavors didn't mesh all that well. Yea, it was tasty, but none of the ingredients were allowed to shine.
